Deer Lake Regional Airport Authority has partnered with the Autism Society of Newfoundland and Labrador to provide new offerings at YDF to assist in removing barriers and assisting passengers in their travel journey.

Sensory Kits

Sensory support kits are available at Deer Lake Regional Airport to help passengers – especially those with sensory sensitivities – by providing items with aim to provide a calmer, more comfortable and accessible travel journey. Airports can be overwhelming environments: bright lights, loud announcements, crowded spaces, long waits, and unfamiliar routines. A sensory kit can help reduce that stress by supporting sensory regulation and emotional comfort during travel.

Each kit includes a variety of tactile and sensory items—such as fidget spinners, squeeze balls, and soft plush toys—designed to encourage self-regulation and help individuals stay calm in busy or potentially overwhelming airport environments. Noise cancelling headphones are also available and can be requested separately.

Travelers can pick up a complimentary sensory support kit by visiting the Security Booth in the terminal.

“I Can Fly With YDF” Social Story

To help make travel more comfortable and predictable, Deer Lake Regional Airport offers a social story titled, “I Can Fly With YDF.” This helpful guide walks travelers through each step of the airport experience—from arrival to boarding to embarking on a plane on our apron—in a clear, friendly, and easy-to-understand format.

Designed especially for first-time flyers, children, and individuals who benefit from extra preparation in their travel journey, the social story helps reduce anxiety by setting expectations and familiarizing travelers with our airport environment.

Complimentary printed copies will be available at the Security Booth or can be downloaded in advance here.
