Invisible Disabilities, Visible Support

At Deer Lake Regional Airport, we are committed to making travel accessible, comfortable, and inclusive for every passenger. That’s why we proudly support the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program—an internationally recognized initiative designed to assist individuals with non-visible disabilities.

Whether you’re navigating the airport, going through security, or preparing to board your flight, the Sunflower program helps signal to staff that you may require additional time, understanding, or assistance.

What is the Sunflower Hidden Disabilities Program?

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is a simple yet powerful way for individuals with non-visible disabilities to discreetly indicate that they may need extra support. By wearing a sunflower lanyard, travellers can communicate their needs without having to explain their condition.

Hidden disabilities can include (but are not limited to):

  • Autism spectrum disorders
  • Chronic pain or fatigue
  • Hearing or vision impairments
  • Anxiety or mental health conditions
  • Cognitive or neurological differences

The program is completely voluntary and designed to empower travellers to choose when and how they request support.

For more information on this program, please visit the Sunflower Hidden Disabilities official webiste.

How the Sunflower Program works at YDF

Passengers travelling through Deer Lake Regional Airport can pick up a sunflower lanyard at the Security Booth located across from Baggage Drop.

When you wear the sunflower symbol:

  • Airport staff are trained to recognize it
  • You may be offered additional assistance
  • You can request help more easily if needed

Our team is here to ensure your journey is as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Our Commitment to Accessibility

At YDF, accessibility goes beyond infrastructure—it’s about people. Our staff are trained to provide respectful, discreet, and supportive service to all travellers, including those with non-visible disabilities.

By participating in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program, we aim to create a welcoming environment where every passenger feels understood and supported throughout their journey.

Plan Ahead

If you feel the Sunflower program could benefit your travel experience, we encourage you to request a lanyard upon arrival at the airport. You may also wish to inform your airline in advance if you require additional assistance.
