Deer Lake Regional Airport Advances Accessibility with GoodMaps and Hidden Disabilities Sunflower
Deer Lake, Newfoundland and Labrador – Deer Lake Regional Airport Authority (DLRAA) is proud to
announce a significant milestone in its commitment to accessibility and inclusion with the launch of
GoodMaps and the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program. The event launching memberships will take
place on June 5th, 2026, during National Disability Week, and coincides with several new accessibility
initiatives being unveiled at the airport.
As part of the event, DLRAA will officially open its new accessible washrooms. We will also launch a
custom autism-friendly social story, designed to help neurodiverse travellers and their families better
prepare for and navigate their airport experience.
The partnership with GoodMaps introduces advanced, accessible indoor wayfinding technology that
allows passengers to independently navigate the terminal using their smartphones. The platform is
particularly beneficial for individuals who are blind or have low vision, have reduced mobility, or are
neurodivergent, while improving wayfinding for all passengers.
Through the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program, Deer Lake Regional Airport joins a growing
international network of organizations working to improve awareness and support for individuals with
non-visible disabilities. The Sunflower symbol allows travellers to discreetly signal that they may need
extra time, patience, or assistance while moving through the airport.
“These initiatives represent meaningful progress toward our goal of creating an airport that is
welcoming and accessible to everyone,” said Tammy Priddle, President and CEO, Deer Lake Regional
Airport Authority. “By combining inclusive technology, enhanced facilities, and greater awareness, we
are reducing barriers and improving the travel experience for passengers of all abilities.”
The June 5th event highlights DLRAA’s ongoing commitment to its Accessibility Plan, which focuses on
removing physical, communication, and social barriers across airport operations. National Disability
Week provides an important opportunity to celebrate these advancements and reinforce the Airport’s
role as a community partner in accessibility and inclusion.
Media, community partners, and stakeholders are invited to attend the event and learn more about the
new programs and facilities.
